I support working with community organizations and leaders to increase the availability of affordable housing.

Chicago has lost a tremendous amount of affordable housing over the last decade—especially larger units that can accommodate families. I support the Chicago Housing Authority’s current
effort to work with private landlords to expand project housing voucher options—including single family homes. I would encourage CHA to establish longer-term contracts (at least 5 years) with landlords to ensure longer-term affordability for low-income families throughout the city, especially in opportunity areas. I also support CHA efforts to buy foreclosed homes to provide affordable housing.
As financial resources for any new programs are extremely limited, I’ll work to educate communities about the importance of affordable housing and using public education tools to increase community acceptance of quality, well maintained affordable housing. We also need to educate the public that housing discrimination based on source income is a violation of the Chicago’s Fair Housing Ordinance.
Reserve a certain percentage of the housing stock specifically for the purpose of ensuring adequate section 8 housing.
