I support increasing the openness and accountability of all procedures relevant to the privatization process.
Please see response to #26. I believe Chicago must demand that every contract serve the best interests of the people of Chicago and must be willing to defend their interests with all administrative and legal tools at our disposal. Patronage has corrupted Chicago politics and government for generations and is not in the interests of the people of Chicago.
I believe that the corruption that has plagued the integrity of our city budget and hiring practices can be resolved through my plan for a participatory, open and transparent government. Through ensuring a more open, democratic process, I believe that we can protect against such abuse.
I believe it is dangerous to outsource the City’s human resource functions or to privatize many other functions as this takes hiring outside the public eye and the reach of the Inspector General. The City would need to specifically write into law regulations about the process and decisionmaking of private companies doing business with the City to make them subject to FOIA requests or other oversight. This would need to be done with great care in collaboration with the City Council, and appropriate oversight mechanisms would have to be established.
We will completely completely stop the Privatization of city assets and services.
