Women and minority participation in city hiring and contracts must be increased. In order to accomplish this, we must offer paid maternity leave, accommodate flexible schedules, and provide nursing rooms, affordable daycare, ongoing training and advancement opportunities based on a commitment to end gender discrimination in city employment and contracting. We must close the gender wage gap within city agencies and ensure that the workplace is free from harassment and discrimination. To increase the participation of both women and minorities in city contracting, we must aggressively recruit and train individuals to compete effectively for city business, and amend the City’s procurement process and regulations to be more inclusive and less burdensome, and incentivize apprentice programs.
I support programs that expand and diversify the base from which we draw our city employees as well as our first responders.
