Will you stop paying legal fees and attempt to recover past legal costs of city employees implicated in the Police Board findings of misconduct related to the Burge case?

Criminal Justice Reform

Yes. The Sun Times has reported that City of Chicago settlements for police brutality cases has totaled nearly a half billion dollars over the last decade. The Burge torture cases alone have cost city taxpayers nearly $100 million. The real price we have paid, however, is in the lives that have been damaged and the civic trust that has been broken between civilians and the law enforcement agencies those civilians should be able to rely upon to act with the utmost integrity. As Mayor, I will not abandon our civic commitment to ensure that those wronged are compensated -- and I will exercise all due diligence to see that the costs of redress are legally assigned to those responsible for those wrongdoings.
